Engineering Service Examination (ESE)/ Indian Engineering Services is the most popular and toughest exam in the field of Engineering. IES officers are selected by the union government on the recommendation made by the UPSC. The IES/ESE examination is conducted only for limited posts. There are very few vacancies in this field for the particular branch that makes this exam slightly tougher than the other Engineering Exams.
Every year ESE is conducted by UPSC to recruit talented Engineers. UPSC conducts this exam only in four streams i.e. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics & telecommunications.
Most IES officers are graduates of premier colleges like IITs, NITs, IISc. ESE is considered as the highest competitive exams. Every year ESE Exam is conducted into stages Pre/Mains followed by an Interview.
Preliminary is totally objective based whereas Main Exam is totally subjective/written examinations. IES officers get high respect and status due to the highly competitive selection procedure. They are posted in various ministries and departments of the government of India such as Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Telecomm, Central water engineering service(CWES), CWC (Central water commission), Central Power engineering service( Central Electricity Authority), Indian Naval Armaments Service ( Directorate of Naval armaments) IDSE, MES, NHAI, CPWD, CPES, Ordinance factories, Border roads, Radio regularity authority of India etc.
After the final selection, IES Final Merit list is released by UPSC. Candidates who get their name in the final merit list they are designated as Class 1 Gazetted Officer. All appointments to the class1 gazetted officers are made by President of India. Candidates can be posted anywhere in India.
Schedule of Examination:-
Preliminary is conducted in the first week of January almost every year and mains is conducted in June/July months evry year at limited centres across India whereas personality test is held in October / November month and finally result is announced in the month of November/December every year.
Mode of Examination:-
Each year, This exam is conducted only in offline mode.
(Stage 1) In the preliminary stages there are two objective papers:-
So, the Preliminary test is conducted for 500 marks maximum which is objective only.
(Stage 2) Engineering services mains exams conventional type paper:-
(Stage 3) Personality test / Interview, Max marks 200
Stage1 + Stage2 + Stage3 is conducted for total 1300 Marks (Max)
These stages ensure that the candidates selected are best suited to handle the responsibilities in a better way. Selected candidates then undergo training at the Institute of their respective cadres that make them acquainted with the area of work, cadre or services they are engaged in.
